Christy's Loc Question

Hello all! I received an email from a reader by the name of Christy. She is obsessed with picking out the lint in her loc's, with is causing major damage, including thinning of her loc's. Below is picture of two of her loc's, one healthy and one thinned out because of constantly being picked at.

I have a few suggestions from previous post (link fix & repairing broken loc's - which can also be used to fix thin loc's). Leave a comment for Christy if you also have advice on what she can do to repair thinning loc's. What have been your quick or not so quick fixes?

Hairstyles for Ladies Summer 2010

Hairstyles for Ladies Summer 2010

Ladies have a wide variety of hairstyles to choose from for summer 2010. More and more hairstylist are developing styles that fit in with the busy lifestyle that most modern women live. These styles allow women to have long hair that is easy to style, short hair they can just wash and finger dry, or medium styles that are the best of both worlds.

Long, sleek hair is an excellent style for summer 2010. Whether layered or all one length, long hair looks excellent when it's healthy and sleek. Use a flat iron and smoothing serum to get the look, which won't take you very long at all to do. There is nothing wrong with long hair during the summer, so if it's what you want, try the sleek look for a sexy new hairstyle.
Summer Hair for Ladies in 2010

For those who love short hair, pixies are as popular as ever. Extremely short, or the newer layered pixie that is just a little bit longer, either one is great for most women. If your face shape normally prohibits you from enjoying a pixie cut, then you might want to consider one of the layered pixies. These styles are a bit longer while still retaining the look and shape of the traditional pixie, and are great ways to use bangs to make the look work for you.
Medium hair lovers will adore the shag style this summer. This layered cut is great because it is extremely easy to style. In fact, many people use their fingers and nothing else! Light-weight thanks to the layers, it is very attractive with its razor textures at the ends. Shags can be longer or shorter depending on personal preference, but they always look great and are excellent for anyone, no matter what shape their face is.

Emo Style and Emo Hairstyle

Emo Style and Emo HairstyleEmo Style and Emo Hairstyle

Emo Style and Emo HairstyleEmo Style and Emo Hairstyle

An emo girl is a girl who likes to dress in emo fashion, has an emo(tional) personality and listens to emo music. (Such as Bright Eyes.) Emo girls like to hang out with other emo girls and emo boys. They are usually sad most of the time, do not smile very often, and just like emo boys, show no signs of self worth or self confidence whatsoever and will not make eye contact with you.

An emo girl has very dark hair, either cut somewhere around their shoulder, or in the classic emo haircut, which is sort of short and spiky in the back with long sweeping bangs in the front. Their hair has to be very dark brown or black, or in some cases very light blonde as long as the cut is right. No matter what, it must be worn so that it is covering part of their face at all times. This is because emo girls tend to be shy and mysterious and donĂ¢€™t really want their face to show too much. They usually wear a lot of dark eyeliner and tend to have washed out skin.

Most emo girls are vegetarians or vegans. Although some girls just dress in the emo style, most emo girls are sad; cry and write poetry a lot, and tend to cut their wrists. They usually hide this by wearing armbands or lots of happy colored bracelets.

Their clothing consists of tight jeans, converse and dark colored tight shirts. They also might have a scarf on. They may a few have pins from shows on their jeans. They usually have at least a few piercings and wear lots of happy colored jewelry. Some wear horn rimmed glasses, some do not. They really dont like it if you confuse them with a goth. Emo and goth are very different so dont make this mistake.

They are most likely to be seen at shows, looking completely sad and lost. Emo girls also love it when emo boys make out with each other (which they tend to do a lot).

Just like Emo boys, they usually walk with their head down not making eye contact with anyone. Although most Emo kids are very sad and feel like the world hates them, they tend to understand what other Emo kids are going through.
That girl over there in the corner with the dark hair, listening to Bright Eyes, and staring at the floor must be emo.

Project Sole - Charity Highlight

I don't know about you, but when my tennis shoes get to the point where the springy bounce is gone, and their not so pretty any more - I am ready to replace them. Once I buy new shoes, I often just toss my old shoes. That for me is the norm. But recently I read an article in people magazine about a man that decided to start donating his and other peoples used tennis shoes to under privileged children in other countries. What a great idea. Of course, if all things were possible, I am sure we would rather be giving these children new shoes. But for a child that has no shoes at all, something used is just as helpful. So I think that when I go to buy my next pair of new sneakers, I will check out some Project Sole as a source to recycle my old shoe.

From Project Sole:
"We are a shoe charity. We use your donations of athletic tennis shoes to supply durable footwear for others in underprivileged communities throughout the world and use proceeds to make financial contributions in our local community:
  • We offer financial support to charitable causes and organizations
  • We supplement educational expenses for local schools
  • We provide student scholarships"

One of the primary factors of hairstyles is the hairstyle length. It can totally help you decide what type of looks you want to achieve. Normally, longer hairstyles can have longer waves or elaborate dos. In this way, it will not require you to have extensions. Fashioned hairstyle like classic bobs and sleek simple cuts are possible if you have medium length of hair. This is because they are so flexible that several unique looks can be produced. On the other hand, short hairstyles keep changing in popularity. However, women seem to love shorter hair. It is because shorter hair is easy to manage. One of the fave short hairstyles definitely is the pixie cut made popular by Natalie Portman, which indicates that short hairstyles too keep up with the latest in different hair length styles.

Braids and Healthy Ends

Question:
How do I moisturize my hair while in Kinky Twists?
Advice: While wearing braids our main goal is to retain some, if not all, of our growth. Right? Well, leaving braids in for a few months is an excellent way to retain length, however; if not done correctly, it can do more harm than good!

When I used to wear braids, for 2-3months at a time, I was excited to relax my hair to see how long it grew, unfortunately my ends were always in bad shape resulting in me getting a massive trim. I then ended up where I started :( I never understood the problem until years later....my ends were LACKING MOISTURE!!

While in braids, we often pay attention to the scalp because it's visible and it's been embedded within us that the scalp is the "most important" when it comes to hair care. Truth be told, we fail to realize that our ends (raveled in the braid) need the most care. Yes, the style is easy to maintain and yes you are giving your hair a rest, but you cannot neglect your hair underneath.

I'm a firm believer in moisturizing braids 2-3 times a day since the braid hair has a tendency to draw moisture from the hair (you have to work harder in putting moisture back into the hair). Make sure you saturate the braid from root to tip. Moisturize the length of the braid all the way down to where your hair ends, within the braid.

The best/easiest way to moisturize your braids is with a spray moisturizer (i.e. Scurl No Drip Activator, Sta Sof Fro Spray or Africa Best Braid Sheen Spray with Conditioner) or make your own (i.e. Water & Glycerin mixed with a moisturizing leave-in conditioner, Aloe Vera Juice, Glycerin & Coconut Oil) and put it in a spray bottle.

Don't forget to spray the length of the braid, not just the scalp. Protect and keep your hair underneath healthy!

Hair mistake confession: The comb that taught me a valuable lesson

I've gotta hand it to myself, I've been on a bit of a winning streak as of late with regards to my recent hair product purchases. I pride myself in my ability to identify my hair's needs, research potential products, and embed them perfectly into my regimen for stellar results. Burt's Bees, Asience, Cera Repair, and Silicon Mix are some of the big winners that immediately come to mind. Yeah, I was feeling so darn good about my midas touch-like ability to identify amazing products that I allowed myself to let my guard down. As a result, I ended up making one of the biggest hair purchase mistakes ever!

Ladies, let me introduce you to my metal dog grooming comb.

Yeah, that's right. It's not a typing error, you actually heard me say "metal dog grooming comb." Your girl actually paid money to buy a metal small toothed comb.... to use on her hair. I actually went back and forth trying to decide whether I should confess this most horrible of hair sins. I decided to come forth for two reasons:
  1. It's all about being transparent whenever possible.
  2. There's a lesson to learn in my foolish decision.

So how did this comb come to be? It all started when I was strolling through an online hair board. A product rave thread about a dog comb caught my eye. A couple of people said they tried it and experienced good results. Without thinking about about I browsed through the thread and moved on. A couple of days later, I accompany hubby to the feed store and, while standing in line, I see a shiny silver comb starring back at me. Again, without thinking about it, I picked up the dog comb and went on my merry way. I was less than a block away from the feed store when I knew I made a terrible mistake. That little metal comb I was clutching in my hand was a huge wake up call.

It was then that I realized that I broke the the cardinal rule of the healthy hair journey. "Always buy according to your hair's need." The very last thing my hair needs is a little metal comb. What's worse is that I have over half a dozen wide tooth, hair friendly combs at my fingertips. This purchase was foolish and unnecessary. I allowed my judgement to be influence solely by what others thought was a decent product. And maybe it is..... But what I failed to do was think critically and ask myself whether this product would be good for me. What value would this product add to my routine? How would my hair benefit?

None of that conversation took place. I just heard about a new thing, saw it, and bought it on a whim. That is part of the reason I am deciding to keep the comb. Yes, that's right, I'm keeping it. This comb will serve as a lesson to me so I never forget. This hair journey is one that should be filled with wise, strategic choices that bring us ever more closely to our ultimate hair goals. We don't have the time or money to be bothered with frivolous hair choices that don't bring us closer to where we want to be.

As I type this post I look down at my little metal comb laying next to my keyboard. The comb means so much more to me now then it did when I first bought it. I now understand how crucial it is to take a direct path to our goals without any side roads or unscheduled stops. Maybe I'm making too much out of this but I believe there's a shiny gold nugget in every circumstance. Thank you little metal dog comb, for helping me to refocus myself on my hair priorities.

Thank you.

So I do apologize if the phrase 'you guys' was a bit annoying... :-P. I will try to watch out for that the next time I do a video.
