Hair Update

I'm 9 weeks post and I will be relaxing in the next couple of days (shortest stretch ever!!)
I'm still on my Personal MBL Challenge and so far so good. I've completed these things:

Year 2 Goals:
- Hit FULL BSL by Spring 2009 (March-April)
- Reach MBL (Oct. '09)
- ~~Simplify my regimen & products even more~~
- Keep breakage to a minimum
- Baby my ends and Moisturize & Seal in Sections
- Increase thickness of ends
- Dust ends frequently
- Use low pH products (shampoos & DC's)
- ~~Increase moisture level~~

I found amazing Deep conditioners that make my hair feel lovely i.e. Silk Elements Mega Cholesterol & Moisturizing Treatment. Thank God for my pjism :-)
I'm using Hollywood Beauty Castor Oil again as my sealant along with Hot Six Oil. Hollywood Beauty Castor Oil is much thicker for this harsh winter weather. I l♥ves it.
S-Curl No Drip Activator is back in my regimen.
Currently using Mane N Tail as part of my protein treatment. i.e. 1 Egg & Mane N Tail w/ EVOO.
Narrowed down my staple products.
I use the Wet Look wide tooth comb from Sally's instead of the Jilbere comb. The teeth are slightly wider and detangles like a dream.
Done with towel drying, I only t-shirt dry my hair now.

Detangle With Shampoo

If you're like me and you have problems detangling your hair at times, try this alternative...Detangle with your Shampoo!! It's different, but it works. I just did it today and my hair glided through the comb with so much ease, I was SHOCKED!

Try these steps:
1. Wet your hair
2. Apply your shampoo to the roots, massage the scalp.
3. While the shampoo is rinsing out and running down your ends take your wide tooth comb and start to comb from the ends up.
4. Rinse.

After I did this my hair was detangled and soft. Detangling with conditioner is ok, but I prefer this 10x more. The product I used was Creme of Nature Detangling Conditioning Shampoo (red label). I highly recommend using a moisturizing CONDITIONING shampoo while doing this, that way the hair is more slippery and the comb can glide through without much effort. This is also good for those that like to Deep Condition on dry hair and then shampoo after.

When V for Vendetta was released, the film generated some controversy. Can a terrorist really be a hero? Can thoughtful political commentary on life in a post 9-11, Orwellian state really sell at the box office or would moviegoers rather see Rumor Has It? Most importantly, did you hear A-list actress Natalie Portman shaved her head for the movie?
For some reason Portman’s bad hair day was all the media could talk about. She did countless interviews promoting the film and the questions inevitably returned to her hair. Did she know she was going to have to cut it when she took the role? Will it ever grow back? She likes being bald? Really?
Unfortunately, the sight of a woman’s bare scalp still makes society’s hair stand on end. Despite how far we’ve come, beauty and sexuality remain tied to a woman’s hair. “Some people will think I’m a neo-Nazi or that I have cancer or I’m a lesbian,” Portman said post V haircut. Why when we see a bald woman do we assume she’s a lesbian, radical feminist, political extremist or understudy for the role of Lieutenant Ilia in Star Trek?
Like me, Portman doesn’t seem to get the big bald deal. She’s quoted as saying she “was excited to have the opportunity to throw vanity away for a little while and go around with no hair.” She admits she even wanted to, gasp, keep her bald ’do.
Portman is not the first actress to shed her locks for a role. Demi Moore shaved her head for G.I. Jane and moviegoers, in addition to longing for a return to her Striptease days, reacted with the same shock and horror. And like actress Sigourney Weaver (who went bald for Alien 3), Moore doesn’t mind losing her femininity, but it comes with a big price tag. In 2004 it was rumored Moore would shave her head again, but only if $1 million be donated to a charity for women with cancer and the haircut happen at a time convenient for the actress (sorry Ashton, you’ve been punked—your wife has no hair!).
Not to be left out of the bald craze, a recent episode of America’s Next Top Model (don’t be judgin’) had the would-be cover girls get bald for a photo shoot (using skull caps of course). Host Tyra Banks reminded the girls that without their hair they would have to rely on their other facial features to carry their beauty. Eyes and nose, it’s all up to you now! Work it! The results were horrible, if only because the girls have been conditioned to equate beauty with hair and looked lost and incapable of posing without their weaves.
In some cultures bald women signify mourning. During slavery in the US and in the prison camps of Nazi Germany, a woman’s hair was shaved as punishment. Stripped of her hair, she was stripped of her dignity. In the heady days of the women’s liberation movement in the 1970s, short hair became the norm for women wanting to challenge traditional notions of femininity and smash the state with a set of scissors. Nowadays, we like our women hairless, just not above the neck.
We describe Captain Picard and Bruce Willis as sexy while anti-Rapunzels are described as rebellious, tough and liberated. Not bad adjectives at all, but sexy rarely enters the equation. If beauty does, it’s often proceeded by the word “unconventional.”
And rather than wearing their politics on their sleeves, bald women are seen to be wearing them on their, well, heads. Sinéad O’Connor’s baldness is regularly mentioned in the same sentence and deemed as subversive as her political lyrics and that time she ripped up a picture of the Pope on national TV and urged viewers to “fight the real enemy.”
Years ago, while in university I shaved my head. At a wedding about a month later, a guest asked what I wanted to be when I graduated. She wasn’t content with my answer of “out of debt,” so I said I wanted to be a journalist. “The world needs more political writers,” she replied. I told her I was more interested in writing about music than politics. (I didn’t know yet that “everything is political.”) “Oh, I just assumed with your haircut you were, you know, ‘political.’” After a few more trips to the open bar I complained to my date about her comments. “Don’t worry,” he said, “it’s cool. Until you shaved your head, I never realized you had really nice eyes.”

For once, Kate Winslet got her fair share of the awards at the Golden Globes but this time, it was her hair that did the talking rather than her voice. It was a good job really after she stuttered or stammered her way through an acceptance speech.
With her fringe sexily swept to one side and the rest of her hair tied back, the golden blonde highlights that she had put in for the show shined and glittered like the beautiful diamonds in her ears. The hair, makeup and even the clothes that she was wearing were reminiscent of the 1950’s era and the classic and elegant look that accompanied it.
Although she wanted to be as blonde as she could for the star scattered award ceremony, a more natural look was opted for. Champagne highlights were lightly strewn through her hair that was all down to the hands of the Creative Color Director for the British hairdresser, John Frieda. Nicola Clarke also colored Kate’s hair for the film that she later won an award for, Revolutionary Road. This was where the 50’s appeal came from and with the sparkling blonde hair, beautiful red lips and classic eyeliner; Kate Winslet couldn’t have got the look more right! It’s just a shame that the speech didn’t come half as natural!

Are you struggling to perfect your hair routine?

Some of you have experienced this...you've revamped your hair routine, you have what you would consider to be pretty healthy hair, but for some reason, you just can't seem to realize (or retain) any length. Believe me, I know how incredibly frustrating it is to continue down a path which seemingly has no reward. We all know that a hair journey requires a great deal of patience but after a year of going on a journey, you'd expect to be a lot farther ahead then when you first started.

Right?

We'll today, I'm here to talk about those frustrations and how we can work together to find those pinhole leaks in your hair routine and stop the bleeding once and for all.

I use the pinhole leak analogy because we should all know by now that our hair grows pretty consistently every month. For those of you who aren't seeing the fruit of a year's worth of hair growing, you can safely assume that something is happening-daily-weekly-monthly, that's chipping away at all the wonderful growth you've been experiencing. I should know, I'm in the same boat.

For this reason I've been really scrutinizing every hair move I make in order to self-identify what I'm doing wrong.

*Either I am not doing something I should be doing.

*Or I'm doing something I shouldn't be doing.

*Or I'm doing something ineffectively

I've narrowed it down to these three statements for the sake of keeping this process simple. As you transition from having mere interest in your hair care to becoming a student of the hair of healthy hair, you need to equip yourself with tools. For me, one of my greatest tools has become my all important hair journal. With this journal I've been able to internalize and express the fears, frustrations, joys, and successes related to my hair care. I've had many of aha moments simply by documenting my journey one step at a time. I encourage you to read my post on creating an effective hair journal if you haven't done so already.

As you look at your hair routine holistically, you should first identify the major buckets of hair care. For a lot of us it's the wash routine, daily/weekly styling, relaxing, nutrition, and the nightly routine. I would say that most of what we do with our hair does have something to do with one of these five areas. Your job now, as a healthy hair apprentice, is study the fine art of perfecting each one of these areas.

No, you cannot, nor should you, try to master all of these areas at once. Doing so will only heighten your frustration levels. In order to master each portion of the hair care routine, you must first pick an opponent, focus on it intensely, and dedicate all of your mental capacities to eliminating any inefficiencies that secretly hide within your routine. Are you struggling to maintain moisture levels? Good...now you have a target. Now you live and breathe increasing moisture until your hair has no choice but to react. You contemplate day and night on how to inject more moisture into your routine if only just a little. You know that a little more moisture every day will eventually lead to hair that is more elastic. Elastic hair leads to less breakage, less breakage leads to healthy hair.

In my experience, the more I focus in one specific area, the more opportunities are revealed to me that I couldn't see before. I heard a proverb once that said "the man that chases 100 rabbits catches none." I love this saying because it's so applicable to everything we do....even our hair care routine. I'm not saying that you totally neglect one area of your routine while focusing on another. Doing so is like squeezing one end of a water balloon (all the water travels to the other end of the balloon and we receive no benefit). If there are several areas of opportunities, work on both.....but focus on one.

When I say focus, I mean that you should be working on eliminating the issue. Your goal should be to comfortably exclaim that you have no issues with [fill in the blank] because you have overcome. You are now the conqueror. This year for me has revolved around one single-minded theme- find the enemy and eliminate it! Yes sometimes I feel as if I am playing a game of whack-a-mole as I focus in on my intended target. But when I look at my progress as a whole, I am content. Content with the fact that I have made progress on this journey. Every step along the way is (and was) not in vain. I take comfort in the fact that, even though I have a long journey ahead, I am not standing in the place where I first started.

1. Aussie Moist as a co-wash. I adore this conditioner. I used to use it all the time early '08!! It's up there with Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship conditioner. I'm going to be using it for the Summer 2009 Co-wash Challenge on Hairlista.

How long have you had your hair in its natural texture? I have been natural for 14 years

What challenges have you come across in the modeling world with keeping and loving your natural hair? The biggest challenge is that natural hair modeling is not mainstream yet, natural hair modeling paying jobs are far and few, but I remain positive that this will change.

Would you ever cut or process your hair to please a big client? No, I would not if they do not accept my hair as it is I will not take the job. I am doing this for such a bigger purpose that is way beyond money. I feel like modeling should be more diverse and I will not conform to what the majority of society considers to be beautiful.

What are some of your favorite products? My favorite products currently are all under the “Jane Carter Solution” umbrella. They work the best on my hair but I am still experimenting with new products.

What do you love most about your texture? I love everything about my hair, I love that I can switch up my hairstyles wearing styles like: braids, afros or curls. I love that my hair represents my ancestors and the beauty of god’s creation.

If you have seen Jordana Brewster on television or in any of her feature films, you will probably remember her lusciously styled hair. Jordana’s gorgeous, dark locks fall just below her shoulders. Her bangs are cut across her forehead, and her hair is slightly textured to fit the shape of her face. If you like the look of one-toned, straight, simple hair, than Jordana’s look is exactly what you need- and here is how you get it:

1. Detangle and smoothen hair before you get into the shower, then apply a moisturizing shampoo which will maximize the likelihood that your hair will turn out looking pin-straight. There are many “straightening” shampoos available for this purpose.

2. Do not shower in hot water, this can dry your hair out and make it less silky. Additionally, hot water will prevent the moisturizing shampoo from doing its job.

3. Finish your shower off with a cold splash of water into your hair. This will increase the overall shine of your hair.

4. Scrunch hair dry to avoid hair breakage. Never rub your hair with a towel!

5. Apply a shining serum, and use a flat brush while blow drying your hair in different sections. This will prevent you from missing any kinks in your hair, which can ruin your look completely.

6. After you are satisfied with the look of your hair, apply some anti-frizz serum. This will keep your hair looking light, silky, and smooth throughout the day. Additionally, anti-frizz serum is extremely important in hot weather because heat tends to make hair dry out and frizz up. So don’t forget your anti-frizz during those summer months!

This strand should be taken from near the eyebrow and it can be left either straight or slightly curled. Ok... so every now and then, I will see someone with an interesting hairstyle, and wonder what I would look like with that look. I would never ever want to cut my loc's, so my curiosity goes unanswered. Essence Magazine has a cool online tool that you can use to try out new hair styles.

The only disadvantage to this application is that none of the styles feature natural hair textures!!

So no luck with my trying on a beautiful afro, shorter loc's, TWA or even a clean shaven beautiful bald head. O well... Maybe I will write to Essence and ask then to broaden their selection. Any how for now, I took a few minutes to goof off, and this is what I came up with:

Hello everyone,

I wanted to write a quick post about my second blog - Dreaming of a Baby. My little biological clock is ticking away, and I really want to have a baby. But getting pregnant has been difficult at this point in my life. I went to a fertility specialist, and he said that being 35 makes my chance of getting pregnant slimmer, but not impossible. So I am like great! Let's go! What ever we need to do... let's do it. But any one with fertility issues, no that its not always that simple. So that's why I created this new blog. It is a way for me to express my joys, frustrations, questions and concerns with the whole process of trying to get pregnant. And to talk about some cool things and resources that I find along the way. I have been told by my Doctor to hold off with trying to get pregnant for about 4 to 5 months , and I tell you why on the blog. If you are experience fertility issues now or in the past or know someone that is going through this, I would love for you all to check out my blog and share some stories. I also would love to hear from woman that are pregnant, new and old moms or adoptive moms. This also includes any men that are also trying to start their own family. I am happy to be able to start this new blog to talk about another part of my life that is very exciting and full possibilities.
